The African on the Foreign Soil...

Have you ever wondered why in today's modern times, people across the world still think Africa aint got nothing better, no advancement but still in its primitive ways? Come on do people even make good use of the internet they got? I know many Africans who live out of their continent would relate to what i'm going to write about here. Mine is more of my experience with some Americans.

Have you ever talked to an American and the conversation was going all smooth and normal and just when you mention that you are from Africa, this person suddenly turns bizarre?…Yes. The numerous ridiculous questions they tend to ask you. The wild and unthinkable that run through their head, like Africa is all about queerness.
OMD…. You just wonder who does that job of feeding them with such outrageous crap. i get so appalled sometimes.

I told some American friends my name is Evangelina and they just stared at each other amazed. They wanted to hear something like a native african name so they asked me again whether i don’t have any other names, something they pretty much wanted to hear. I told them that is my real name from birth.
They never notice you speak good english until you tell them you really are from africa.
"You from africa? how come you speak such good english…or maybe did you learn it on your stay here?”
-And If your parents are not here, they ask if you ever get the chance to talk to your parents on the phone twice a year.
-You on Facebook and they ask, "these your friends on Facebook are in africa? how do they do that because i heard y'all don't have internet, and you don't have electricity either…talk about computers.”
-You have straight and white teeth and they ask you how you did that.

i got a whole bunch of these crazies…

So, this HS kid randomly knocks on my door for some school project. Something came up and I told him i was from Ghana and from the look on his face, i could just tell he didn't even know where that was, that i won't blame him because i also don't know where some countries even are. LoL. I went on to tell him it's in West Africa….he just replied, "oh it is?" and he started ranting about the jungle and sahara tales about Africa. "Have you ever seen an elephant, chimpanzee blah blah blah…."

And listen to this one too…
One time at work, in the break-room, this guy and i were talking….and as usual, he goes wild like he'd just seen an elephant in the break room when i told him i was from Africa. He was going to get my phone number and before that, he asked me something which was amazingly dumb. He asked whether i know how to text…..He straight away ignored the fact that he had just seen me texting. Why? because i am from Africa and from what he heard, we don't use phones.

They see you and they ask you if you know the guy they once met who is from Nigeria when you just told them you from Ghana (or another african country). I sometimes feel like asking them too if they know some (random name) who lives in a different state other than where they stay at. [laughing out loud]. Africa is a continent not a country and even if it was, you don’t expect me to know everybody in my country.

Most non-african people think that all africans are poor, walk around naked or clothed with dry leaves, live in houses built from hay/mud, no electricity, no good food, no clean water and have all sorts of wild animals running around our compound as a pet. Meanwhile, i know some americans who carry a hen around cuddling it like it was a dog. They forgot about that though.

One more thing is that, they also like to compare, tell their outrageous tales and make Africa seem like it's the worst place on earth you could ever be. Hello there…we are developing. We live in houses in towns and cities not in huts or on trees in the jungle/wild.
We ride in cars not on camels.
We go to school and we speak english too.
We don't keep neither the monkeys, lions, elephants, giraffes nor any of the other wild animals roaming on the streets….I tell you i have never even seen an elephant or a lion with my very own eyes before.
We also are technologically advancing, we have communication devices so we can call our families anytime.
We don't work on the farms and slave ourselves anymore…. we have offices, stores, industries, companies, big ones.
See we might be underdeveloped but its peaceful and less stressful. Our economy might be bad but its the same almost everywhere.

Is that how y'alls mind is biased against us, Africans?
They sometimes act so smart yet ignorant…. They got the knowledge but they still lack it.  The thing is that, they hardly show the good places and stuff about Africa on t.v and they make it seem like there is nothing important to talk about out there.
We got beautiful cities and towns too but they always show the slums and rural areas where life is at its worst. Can Africa get some credit, even if it's a little one.

One thing i really like about some of these Americans is that, they always say african women are beautiful. Ha! such great compliment. They all say they would want to go there one day and get some nice African woman. Some too do enjoy some of the African food, like the peanut butter soup, aka groundnut soup, (nkatsenkwan in the local dialect)

As a true African, I always go out of my way to tell them about the good Africa they don’t know about whenever they hit me up with all that African crap. Africa is a beautiful place to be but we are here because we got the opportunity to explore and see other places and not because our country is hell. Every place is or could be hell. No doubt, America is a good place to be but as they say ' there aint no place like home’ and Africa is my home. Don't underestimate the African.

My Opinion!!! Respect that.
